Punjab parties clash over drug crisis as election approaches

In the run-up to Punjab's 2027 state election, the drug issue has become a central political battleground. The BJP, despite its limited foothold in the state, began a 13-day "Nasha Mukt Yatra" covering nearly 4,000 km and all 117 constituencies, concluding on September 30 with a rally likely addressed by Union Home Minister Amit Shah. AAP, now the incumbent, defends its record by citing ongoing police operations, the seizure of heroin, and the expansion of de-addiction and rehabilitation facilities. It also urges opponents to recall the drug surge during the SAD-BJP coalition from 2007 to 2017. Leaders from each party have exchanged accusations, with Congress leader Sachin Pilot and SAD figure Bikram Singh Majithia highlighting alleged government inaction, while AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal blames the central BJP-ruled states for most narcotics entering India. The controversy reflects a pattern of repeated promises and blame-shifting across successive governments.
