Punjab pizza courier killed in New York shooting during alleged robbery
Gurudeep Singh, a 28-year-old pizza delivery driver from Punjab, was fatally shot in New York after an unidentified gunman opened fire during a suspected robbery.
A 28-year-old man from Jabbowal village in Punjab's Kapurthala district, Gurudeep Singh, was shot dead while delivering pizza in New York's Richmond Street area. One outlet's reports indicate an unidentified armed person opened fire during what appears to be a robbery attempt. Singh, who migrated to the United States roughly 13 years ago after borrowing money for the journey, worked long hours to support his family back home.
His father, Pyara Lal, said the debt taken for the move left the family in financial difficulty. Singh, unmarried, is survived by his father and a brother who work as DJs. The family has appealed to both Punjab and Indian governments for help returning his body and has asked U.S. authorities to locate and prosecute the shooter.
Why it matters
The killing highlights the risks faced by migrant workers and raises concerns about safety for gig-economy drivers in major cities.
