Putin and Trump discuss possible three-way summit with Xi in November
Kremlin spokesman Dmitri Peskov confirmed that President Putin and President Trump talked about a trilateral meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
When asked whether Trump and Putin had broached the subject of a trilateral summit with Xi Jinping during their Tuesday conversation, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitri Peskov answered affirmatively. The call came after Washington’s envoys visited Kyiv and Moscow over the weekend in an attempt to restart U.S. initiatives to resolve the Ukraine conflict. Peskov noted that the idea of a three-leader meeting had been mentioned previously and might materialise.
Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Moscow has drawn closer to Beijing, highlighted by Putin’s recent meeting with Xi in Bishkek at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit. Kremlin diplomatic adviser Yuri Ouchakov also said that bilateral talks among the three leaders had been discussed. The APEC gathering, which includes Russia, China and the United States, is scheduled for November, and Russia has indicated Putin will attend, though Washington has not confirmed Trump’s participation.
