Qantas flight to Sydney diverts to Christchurch after flames seen from engine

Flight QF122 left Queenstown for Sydney on Saturday afternoon and, moments after take-off, on-lookers recorded flames emanating from the aircraft’s left engine. The airline identified the problem as a suspected engine issue but said neither engine shut down nor failed. Pilots executed a diversion to Christchurch, where the plane landed safely under priority clearance.

Passengers, including Liam Aspinall who witnessed the fire from the ground, reported hearing loud noises that resembled gunshots. Qantas confirmed that the crew managed the situation according to training and that support, such as lodging and alternative travel arrangements, is being provided to those on board.
