Qantas ground crews and Sydney security staff launch coordinated strikes at major airports

Industrial action is set for Thursday across Australia's busiest airports as Qantas ground staff and Certis security workers walk off the job. Approximately 500 employees from Qantas subsidiaries—including QGS, AAE and QantasLink—will strike for 24 hours at Sydney, Adelaide, Brisbane and Perth, demanding higher pay, better job security and safety standards. At the same time, up to 400 Certis security staff at Sydney Airport will conduct two separate two-hour stoppages after a 99% vote for protected action.

Union officials argue the airline's division into 38 separate companies drives down wages and conditions, while Qantas says its contingency plans will avert delays. Sydney Airport, however, cautions travelers to expect disruptions and to allow extra time for their journeys.
