Qantas to launch nonstop Sydney-New York service in mid-2028
Qantas announced that its ultra-long-range Airbus A350-1000 will begin nonstop flights from Sydney to New York in mid-2028, cutting the journey by about three hours.
Qantas disclosed that its Project Sunrise fleet will include a custom Airbus A350-1000 ultra-long-range jet capable of flying more than 16,000 kilometres nonstop, enabling a direct Sydney-to-New York service from mid-2028. The aircraft carries an additional 20,000-litre fuel tank, allowing up to 22-hour flights and shaving roughly three hours off the typical itinerary. The airline plans to sell tickets starting in August next year, with the first plane due for delivery by April 2027.
The new route will follow the commencement of nonstop Sydney-London flights in October 2027 and targets premium travelers on the U.S. East Coast. The cabin will feature 238 seats across four classes, including a wellness zone and specially designed business and first-class suites. Qantas cites continued demand for premium long-haul travel as a key driver for the launch.
