Qatar launches its first electric-vehicle plant, targeting 2028 rollout
Qatar will build its inaugural EV factory, slated to begin output in 2028 after a partnership between JTA International Investment Holding and UK-based Watt Electric Vehicle Company.
The agreement calls for the production of passenger cars and delivery vans designed for hot climates, with an initial capacity of roughly 5,000 units per year. This move adds Qatar to a growing Gulf push into electric mobility, joining Saudi Arabia’s investments in Lucid and Ceer and the UAE’s status as the region’s biggest EV market. Regional governments are seeking to raise the share of electric vehicles on their roads.
Why it matters
The project signals Qatar’s entry into the fast-growing electric-vehicle market and highlights the Gulf’s shift toward greener transportation.
