Qatar to fund large solar plant in Lebanon to ease chronic power shortages

Qatar's prime minister announced a QatarEnergy-TotalEnergies partnership to build a massive solar power plant in Lebanon, with no cost to the Lebanese state.

In Beirut, Qatar's prime minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani declared that QatarEnergy and French firm TotalEnergies will jointly develop a large-scale solar power plant in Lebanon, fully funded and run by Qatar. The initiative is intended to address Lebanon's chronic power shortages, which stem from an indebted state electricity company and outdated infrastructure. Prime Minister Nawaf Salam said the plan will be submitted to the Lebanese cabinet for approval.

Qatar highlighted that the project will incur no expense for the Lebanese government, offering a boost to the beleaguered economy. The announcement came alongside discussions of Israel's ongoing attacks in southern Lebanon and Qatar's coordination with the United States on reconstruction efforts. Lebanese officials thanked Qatar for its continued support during the nation's financial collapse and security challenges.
