Quarter of U.S. financial firms now link compensation to AI expertise

A recent Selby Jennings survey finds that 25% of U.S. financial companies base raises, promotions and bonuses on employees' AI skills.

According to a Selby Jennings survey of 500 financial companies, AI competence is now a decisive hiring criterion, valued nearly four times more than alma mater prestige. The study shows that 25% of U.S. financial firms have instituted pay structures that reward AI skill, linking raises, promotions and bonuses to demonstrated proficiency. This practice is especially prevalent among fintech startups and smaller firms, rather than established banks and trading houses.

Nearly one-third of the surveyed firms have established dedicated roles or departments to oversee AI deployment, focusing on extracting real value rather than merely tracking token usage. In many organizations, the responsibility for monitoring AI performance falls to existing managers, effectively turning them into part-time AI accountants.
