Quebec election agency to send voter guides in French only, adds QR link for English

Élections Québec will mail election guides solely in French for the upcoming provincial vote, providing a QR code that links to English information online.

In compliance with Quebec's 2022 language law, Élections Québec announced that all mailed voter information for the upcoming provincial election will be printed only in French. To ensure English-speaking voters can still obtain the content, each mailing will include a QR code directing users to the agency's English-language website. The agency clarified that only Indigenous voters and individuals formally recognized as needing English instruction may contact it to receive printed materials in English.

Voters should receive their provincial election guide and notice of entry no later than the week of Sept. 14, with reminder cards dispatched the week of Sept. 28. The election is scheduled for Oct. 5. This marks the first instance of French-only mailed materials in a Quebec general election.

Why it matters

The change affects how Quebec voters receive election information, reflecting new language rules and impacting accessibility for English speakers.
