Queen bees dump pesticide residues into eggs, risking colony health

Scientists found that honeybee queens transfer pesticide loads into their eggs, protecting themselves but potentially harming the brood and the hive.

University of California, Davis researchers, in collaboration with Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and the USDA Agricultural Research Service, have identified a novel defense in honeybee queens whereby pesticide exposure leads to the transfer of toxins into their eggs, a phenomenon they label maternal offloading. Worker bees normally filter up to 95% of contaminants, but this capacity fell to 86% after ten days, allowing chemicals to accumulate in the queen.

In controlled nanocolony setups containing one queen and sixty workers, the team fed pollen laced with methyl parathion marked with a low-level radioactive tracer and used BioAMS to track its movement. Findings indicate that eggs heavily loaded with pesticides may not develop properly, creating a potential tipping point toward gradual colony collapse. Senior author Sascha Nicklisch warned that this hidden strategy could have serious implications for beekeeping, agriculture and integrated pest-management practices. The study, published in Current Biology, opens new questions about the long-term impact of pesticide offloading on hive viability.
