Queen Mette-Marit to Pause Official Duties During Recovery from Lung Transplant
Queen Mette-Marit will not undertake any scheduled official engagements while she continues rehabilitation after her lung transplant.
Following a lung transplant, Queen Mette-Marit is staying in rehabilitation and will not assume any scheduled official engagements for the time being. The palace indicated that King Haakon will handle all constitutional duties and maintain the usual program schedule. The royal family plans thematic visits covering democracy, nature, business, defence and inclusion, though these will be limited in scope.
No large official trips or state visits are expected during the upcoming months. Internal processes after the recent succession will require additional time. Crown Princess Ingrid Alexandra will focus on her studies, attending only select official events before returning to Australia for the new academic term, while Queen Sonja will represent the monarchy in official capacities.
Why it matters
The queen's extended absence affects the royal family's public schedule and highlights the impact of serious health issues on constitutional duties.
