Queens Fraudsters Sentenced After TikTok Video Exposed Staged Car Crashes
Two men received prison terms after a TikTok clip helped authorities dismantle their scheme of faking traffic collisions for insurance payouts.
Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz disclosed that Jaime Huiracocha, 53, and Victor Murillo, 34, have been sentenced to minimum terms of one and two years in prison for orchestrating a series of fabricated car crashes that generated more than $80,000 in insurance settlements. The scheme involved Murillo abruptly braking his Honda Civic to cause rear-ends while Huiracocha coordinated from a second vehicle, with accomplices feigning injuries and obscuring the driver with plastic bags.
A TikTok video of one crash, presented to Katz by her 15-year-old son, prompted the investigation that linked three incidents on the Belt Parkway. Additional conspirators Maikel Martinez and Ivon Matus-Martinez have also pleaded guilty and await sentencing. Governor Kathy Hochul used the case to highlight ongoing efforts to curb insurance fraud and lower New York’s high auto-insurance costs.
