Queensland approves crocodile-rich Fitzroy River as 2032 Olympic rowing venue

Queensland Premier David Crisafulli told parliament that the Fitzroy River in Rockhampton has been cleared by the International Olympic Committee to host rowing, para-rowing, canoe sprint and para-canoe competitions at the 2032 Games. The river, known for its crocodile population, had faced criticism over safety, fairness and environmental impact, but a comprehensive technical assessment by independent marine engineers satisfied officials.

Representatives from World Rowing and Paddle Worldwide also inspected the flatwater course and endorsed the location. Crisafulli emphasized the government's commitment to regional Queensland and dismissed doubts about the venue's viability. The Games Authority will now proceed with detailed design, planning and construction for the Olympic events.
