Queensland butchers vie for Sausage King title in Rockhampton showdown

Queensland’s independent butchers converged on Rockhampton, the state’s beef capital, to contest the Australian Meat Industry Council’s Sausage King and Best Burger titles, with almost 600 entries evaluated over three days. Judges, ranging from Brisbane-based sausage connoisseur Gary Thompson to local amateurs Vicky Aubsich and Greg Roberts, assessed entries on craftsmanship, taste and originality, tasting inventive combos like white chocolate, wasabi, camel and crocodile.

The competition, moved from Toowoomba to improve access for remote producers, also includes six sausage categories and three burger categories. Nicole Newman explained that the northern location reduces logistical hurdles, while evening judging sessions allow day-time workers to take part. Participants such as chef Billy Gibney noted the event’s boost to small-business butchers and community connections. Winners will advance to the national finals in Melbourne later this year.
