Queensland deputy premier declines to revisit Olympics contractor amid gang-linked security claims
Deputy Premier Jarrod Bleijer said he will not reassess BMD's contract for the Brisbane Olympic stadium despite allegations that the firm hired a security provider tied to the Comancheros bikie gang.
In July, the Queensland government selected BMD to perform initial construction at Victoria Park, where the new Brisbane Olympic and Paralympic Games stadium will be built. During a recent commission of inquiry, accusations emerged that BMD had contracted a security company linked to the Comancheros bikie gang in 2024, and that gang members allegedly threatened a worker at the Centenary Bridge site. Deputy Premier Jarrod Bleijer said he did not know of these claims when the Games Independent Infrastructure and Coordination Authority awarded the contract after an independent procurement process, and he will not review the agreement.
BMD declined further comment while the inquiry continues. The CFMEU administrator Michael Crosby condemned the alleged behavior as morally repugnant, but Bleijer dismissed the union’s statements as laughable. The episode also raised questions about BMD’s political donations, which total more than $22,000 to the Queensland LNP this year.
Why it matters
The decision affects oversight of a major Olympic infrastructure contract and raises concerns about alleged criminal links.
