Queensland government reaffirms plan to deliver one million homes by 2044

The Queensland LNP government continues to back its pledge to build one million homes, including 53,500 social units, by 2044 despite workforce shortages.

Queensland's Liberal National Party government remains committed to its ambitious target of delivering one million homes, including 53,500 social and community dwellings, by 2044. While the state reported a 35% increase in construction activity, the 34,627 homes finished in the last financial year are well below the 50,000 annual pace required to meet the goal. Premier David Crisafulli warned that recent federal tax reforms could dampen sector momentum, and the building industry peak body Master Builders estimates a shortfall of roughly 20,000 tradies.

A 6.4-hectare former Energex site in Banyo will host 207 townhouses, 64 affordable units and an 180-bed aged-care facility, with construction expected to begin next year under Economic Development Queensland's fast-track scheme. Housing Minister Sam O'Connor acknowledged community concerns but emphasized the site's long-standing designation for housing. Critics, including Queensland Council of Social Service chief Aimee McVeigh, argue that broader affordable-housing measures are needed beyond one outlet plan.

Why it matters

The housing target affects thousands of Queenslanders and hinges on resolving a skilled-worker shortage.
