Queensland group urges wattle planting to drape Brisbane in green and gold for 2032 Games

The Queensland Wattle Association is championing "Project Brisbane Gold," a proposal to plant thousands of native golden wattle trees throughout southeast Queensland before the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Association president Mike Gilmour says the timing aligns with the species' typical mid-July to mid-August bloom, ensuring the city is awash in green and gold during the event. About 10,000 seeds have been collected, with community contributors like Ann Gibbons offering large donations.

The plan envisions wattles lining streets, parks and venues, and potentially appearing on medals, athletes' bouquets, uniforms and marketing material. Final decisions rest with the Games organising committee, governments and local councils, and the association hopes National Wattle Day on September 1 will bolster its case.
