Queensland social housing to receive major energy efficiency upgrades

The Albanese government is set to announce a federal funding package for Queensland social housing that will enable upgrades in 8,000 properties. The initiative, delivered through the Social Housing Energy Performance Initiative, will install ceiling insulation, efficient fans, electric stoves, upgraded hot-water systems and rooftop solar panels. It follows a joint funding agreement announced in September 2024, under which over 15,000 homes have already received energy improvements.

Federal Assistant Minister for Climate Change and Energy Josh Wilson highlighted the importance of reducing energy costs for low-income households. Advocacy group Power Together noted that disadvantaged families spend a disproportionate share of their income on energy. The upgrades aim to make homes more comfortable year-round and lessen the financial burden of utility bills.
