A Queensland Supreme Court judge rejected a challenge to a suppression order, so the name of a prominent man linked to a Cairns extortion case will stay hidden.
The court dismissed a judicial review filed by media groups that argued the magistrate lacked authority to conceal the man's identity. The individual, identified only as MM, was mentioned in connection with an extortion investigation earlier this year but faces no charges. The original order, issued by magistrate Gelma Meoli, aimed to protect the anonymity of the alleged female victim. Queensland Police Commissioner Brett Pointing had supported the suppression. Justice James Henry upheld the order, and the underlying extortion case proceeds.
