Queensway Inns and Common Table Group to revive 110 former Whitbread sites
Queensway Inns and Common Table Group have bought 110 former Whitbread restaurants and pubs, planning to reopen them across the UK.
Whitbread closed a large number of its Beefeater, Brewers Fayre and Cookhouse outlets in September as part of a cost-saving overhaul. Queensway Inns purchased 53 of those sites, promising to convert them into a new line of value pubs and to re-employ many of the displaced workers. Common Table Group secured 57 locations, also taking over a Premier Inn hotel, and plans to open the venues as soon as possible, targeting mid-November for the first launch.
Together the deals cover a total of 110 former Whitbread sites across the United Kingdom. Both companies say the reopenings will retain restaurant services and offer an all-day food and drink menu for diners and hotel guests, while creating more than 700 new jobs. The initiatives are presented as a response to the job losses caused by Whitbread’s recent closures.
Why it matters
The reopenings could restore hundreds of jobs lost after Whitbread's large-scale site closures.
