Quest Diagnostics shuts down systems after cyberattack accesses patient data

Quest Diagnostics confirmed that unauthorized actors accessed patient health information, prompting the company to temporarily disable several of its digital platforms.

Quest Diagnostics reported that a cyber intrusion on Wednesday compromised its Quanum Lab Services Manager platform, leading the company to suspend access to that system and to its Essential Insights and LabHQ services as a safety measure. The breach appears to have exposed some patient health and personally identifiable information, though no data was taken from the latter two platforms. Despite the shutdown, the firm says its primary testing functions remain intact and that providers can place orders using paper requisitions or the Quanum eLabs system.

Quest has notified federal authorities, engaged outside cybersecurity experts, and filed a disclosure with the Securities and Exchange Commission. The company is working to determine the full scope of affected patients and providers and will issue required notifications. This follows a prior incident involving a third-party billing firm that impacted millions of Quest patients in 2019.

Why it matters

A breach of a major diagnostic company's data could affect millions of patients and raise concerns about health-record security.
