Quincy gas station manager hunts winner of $1.04 billion Powerball ticket
The manager of a Quincy, Illinois gas station that sold the $1.04 billion Powerball winner says he is narrowing down the ticket buyer, while the store prepares to collect a $500,000 bonus.
John Marshall, 47, manages the Hy-Vee Gas Fresh & Fast convenience store in Quincy, Illinois, which sold the $1.04 billion Powerball ticket on Wednesday night. He says about 15% of his patrons are travelers, while most are local regulars, and he has already seen many of them, likening the search to a murder mystery. The winning combination—4, 26, 66, 67, 69 and Powerball 9—produced the second-largest jackpot in Illinois history and the eighth-largest in Powerball overall.
Illinois law permits the winner to remain anonymous if they file a request, though the prize must be claimed within a year. The store is set to receive a $500,000 cash bonus, and lottery officials from Springfield will visit the shop to deliver it. Marshall expressed a desire to shake the winner’s hand and said he would likely apply the bonus toward his mortgage and possibly some investments. The win has energized the small river town of roughly 40,000 residents, putting Quincy on the map and generating additional funds for the state’s Common School Fund.
