Quirón executive under material investigation for alleged mask-sale commission scheme

Fernando Camino, a senior Quirón director, has been under material investigation for roughly 30 months for allegedly facilitating a commission on mask purchases with Alberto González Amador.

A recent prosecutor’s brief clarified that Fernando Camino, president of Quirón Prevención, has been materially investigated for approximately 30 months in connection with a suspected commission scheme involving mask sales and Alberto González Amador. Despite the length of the probe, Camino has not been called to give evidence, and only in June the magistrate allowed the Central Operational Unit (UCO) to review his bank statements.

Earlier procedural delays, including a change of judge, slowed the case, but the Provincial Court has now cleared the way for a full inquiry into the financial and tax records of Camino, González Amador and Gloria Carrasco. Operación Cirbelia will focus on whether Camino facilitated Mape’s purchase of masks and received a concealed half-million-euro commission, allegedly disguised through the purchase of a company owned by Camino’s wife.

The judge has scheduled Camino’s testimony for October, with the hearing set for early December. Quirón’s spokesperson reiterated that being investigated does not imply guilt and that the company’s ethical code will be applied.

Why it matters

The probe highlights potential corruption in Spain’s private health sector and raises questions about corporate governance.
