Rabies fatalities in Sindh climb to 40 after elderly man's death

An elderly man from Baldia Town died of rabies at Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, bringing the province's death count to 40 this year.

A man in his seventies from Baldia Town died of rabies at Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, raising Sindh's death toll from the disease to 40 this year. He had been bitten by a dog more than three weeks earlier but did not seek preventive care. The province's health authorities have logged over 11,000 dog-bite cases and ten rabies fatalities, with recent deaths also reported in Diplo, Tharparkar, and Hyderabad.

Experts note that numerous infections remain hidden because patients rely on home treatments or faith healers. They stress the need for public education, humane management of stray dogs, and ready access to proper medical treatment, including wound cleaning, vaccination and, when required, rabies immunoglobulin. Early intervention can stop the virus, which is almost always fatal once symptoms appear.

Why it matters

The rising rabies death toll highlights gaps in prevention and treatment that put vulnerable communities at risk.
