Race-motivated crimes hit record highs in Northern Ireland, officials warn
Jon Boutcher highlighted a surge in race-hate incidents and crimes in Northern Ireland, reaching the highest levels since records began.
Jon Boutcher warned that race-motivated crime in Northern Ireland has climbed to its highest 12-month level since records began in 2004/05. Police recorded 2,561 race-hate incidents and 1,615 race-hate crimes from July 2025 to July 2026, up from 2,058 incidents and 1,347 crimes the year before. At a Policing Board meeting, member Peter Osborne highlighted the stark contrast, noting a net increase of 503 incidents for race versus only 69 for all other hate motives combined.
The surge follows a widely shared video of a stabbing that triggered riots, and Boutcher cited recent geopolitical debates over migration as a contributing factor. He called for stronger criminal-justice action and societal education to achieve zero tolerance for such offenses.
Why it matters
Rising race-hate crimes threaten community cohesion and safety in Northern Ireland.
