The First and deputy First Ministers announced that Rachel Langdale KC will serve as chair of the Truth Recovery Public Inquiry, which will investigate mother-baby institutions, Magdalene laundries and workhouses from 1922 to 1995. The Executive Office described Langdale as a highly respected barrister with a strong track record in complex investigations and public inquiries, noting her previous roles in the Thirlwall and Nottingham inquiries and her position as Head of Chambers at 7BR.
The appointment is presented as evidence of the government's dedication to an independent, survivor-centred approach. Oral hearings are projected to start in 2027, with the inquiry’s findings to be published in 2029. The Terms of Reference will be finalised in the coming months after consultation with the chair. Alliance Executive Office spokesperson Paula Bradshaw and a South Belfast MLA expressed support, emphasizing the need for the inquiry to proceed promptly and without additional delays.
