Radek Mátl outlines timeline and challenges for completing Prague Ring Road by 2033
ŘSD chief Radek Mátl says the Prague Ring Road will be finished by the end of 2033, but technical hurdles and land-acquisition delays push parts of the project into 2028.
Radek Mátl, head of the Road and Motorway Directorate, reaffirmed the goal of completing the entire Prague Ring Road by 2033, acknowledging that the Běchovice-D1 stretch will now be finished in the summer or third quarter of 2028 after delays caused by intricate gas-pipeline relocations and shortages of suitable fill material for protective embankments. He noted that the northern segment requires the purchase of land worth billions of crowns, with 60% of contracts already returned and roughly 80-90% of parcels acquired, while a small fraction of owners remain reluctant.
Mátl stressed that the 2024 budget, if approved, should fund all essential highway projects, but future years will face tighter finances as the Prague Ring and the 59-km D3 extension demand around 150 billion crowns. He also mentioned upcoming milestones such as the completion of the D3 border section with Austria and the D11 link to Poland by 2029, and highlighted ongoing negotiations with local municipalities that oppose certain alignments.
