Rahul Gandhi's lawyer rejects request for voice sample in Savarkar defamation suit
Rahul Gandhi's defence counsel argued that a court-ordered voice sample is premature in the defamation case filed by Satyaki Savarkar.
In a Pune court, Rahul Gandhi's attorney Milind D Pawar opposed a petition seeking a voice sample from the opposition leader in the defamation case lodged by Satyaki Savarkar, grandson of Hindutva ideologue Vinayak Damodar Savarkar. Pawar maintained that the trial has not yet progressed to a point where the alleged speech's defamatory intent can be assessed, rendering the voice sample request premature. The special MP/MLA court has ordered the defence to submit its formal reply by September 1.
The application was filed after Gandhi's appearance in Pune on August 22. During cross-examination, Savarkar disclosed familial connections to Gopal and Nathuram Godse and their involvement with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, as well as his parents' work for one outlet Mahasabha. Objections raised by Savarkar's lawyer Sangram Kolhatkar concerning questions about the RSS will be addressed in the final judgment.
Why it matters
The ruling will shape procedural aspects of a high-profile defamation case involving a senior opposition leader.
