Rahul Gandhi to appear before Uttar Pradesh MP/MLA court on October 26
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is expected to attend a special MP/MLA court in Sultanpur, Uttar Pradesh, on Monday as the bench prepares to deliver its verdict in a 2018 defamation case.
A special MP/MLA court in Sultanpur, Uttar Pradesh, has scheduled a hearing for Rahul Gandhi on Monday, October 26, coinciding with the expected pronouncement of its verdict in a defamation case filed in 2018. The suit originates from comments Gandhi made at a Bengaluru conference, where he allegedly described Union Home Minister Amit Shah as a murderer. The complaint was filed by Vijay Mishra, who was then the BJP district vice-president, and has been pursued for nearly five years.
Gandhi's counsel has not commented, while Mishra's lawyer, Santosh Kumar Pandey, said the maximum penalty could be two years' imprisonment if the court finds sufficient proof. Judge Yogesh Kumar Yadav presides over the case, which has been delayed multiple times since its inception. Gandhi is expected to appear in court to either secure bail or face potential sanctions.
Why it matters
The hearing could result in a prison sentence for a prominent opposition leader, affecting India's political landscape.
