Raiffeisen Bank shares plunge after Grizzly Research alleges sanction-evasion ties
Raiffeisen Bank International's stock dropped sharply on Thursday after short-seller Grizzly Research accused the bank of facilitating prohibited Russian trade.
Shares of Raiffeisen Bank International fell sharply on Thursday following a report by short-seller Grizzly Research that links the bank to sanction-evasion activities. The report cites customs data indicating that the bank's Russian subsidiary handled shipments valued at about $107 million that could have military applications, and also identifies trade flows with Iran and North Korea totaling more than $10 million. RBI’s spokesperson Rupert Reif called the allegations "factually false and misleading" and highlighted the robustness of the bank's compliance systems, which have been repeatedly audited since the large-scale invasion of Ukraine.
Management, led by CEO Michael Höllerer, has announced plans to withdraw from Russia, yet a sale of the subsidiary remains unresolved due to lack of approval from Russian, EU and US authorities. Under European Central Bank directives, RBI has already reduced its Russian exposure and limited international payment services to a select group of large clients. Analysts note that while the customs data alone does not prove a sanctions breach, heightened scrutiny from regulators such as OFAC or the ECB could intensify pressure on the bank and affect its valuation.
Why it matters
The allegations could trigger regulatory action and impact RBI's efforts to unwind its Russian operations, affecting investors and sanction enforcement.
