Rail driver strike escalates, risking prolonged disruption across Norway
A two-week strike by train drivers continues with no scheduled talks, prompting hundreds of train cancellations and a risk of a longer conflict.
Train drivers in Norway have been on strike for two weeks, and no meeting dates have been set between the union and the employers. The stoppage has forced the cancellation of hundreds of train departures, especially on the eastern region, with additional cancellations on the western side. Vy responded by temporarily laying off a number of conductors, and the strike has already caused significant delays for passengers.
The union head warned that the absence of negotiations raises the chance of a prolonged dispute. Spekter's communications director emphasized that they remain open to talks but noted that the responsibility now rests with the Norsk Lokomotivførerforbund.
Why it matters
The strike disrupts nationwide rail travel, affecting commuters and the economy.
