Rana Sanaullah Calls for End to Capital Marches, Bars Protests in Islamabad

On a televised programme, Prime Minister’s Adviser on Political Affairs Rana Sanaullah affirmed the right to protest while insisting that Islamabad be exempt, calling for an end to the practice of long marches to the capital. He referenced the recently enacted Peaceful Assembly and Public Order Act 2024, which bans gatherings in the city without prior approval. Sanaullah criticized PTI’s intent to march for Imran Khan’s release, stating no permission would be granted and suggesting such actions could be viewed as attempts to overthrow the government.

He noted that security containers have been positioned for safety but roads remain open, and that foreign diplomats present would send a negative message if protests occurred. The Islamabad High Court has already ruled that political parties have no lawful right to occupy public roads or buildings in Islamabad, and security forces, including Rangers, have been deployed across Islamabad and several districts of Punjab until early October.
