Raphael Glucksmann Announces Presidential Run, Challenging Left Unity Ahead of 2027 Election

Raphael Glucksmann declared his candidacy for the French presidency, positioning himself against Jean-Luc Melenchon and the far-right surge.

On Sunday, centre-left politician Raphael Glucksmann announced his intention to run for the French presidency, aiming to challenge hard-left leader Jean-Luc Melenchon for the leadership of a divided left. Speaking on TF1, he argued that handing power to the far-right, led by Marine Le Pen, would be unacceptable. Glucksmann, who headed the mainstream left alliance to 14% in the 2024 European Parliament vote, currently lags Melenchon in opinion polls and must convince other centre-left figures to unite.

Though critical of certain pro-business measures by President Emmanuel Macron, he aligns with a pro-European, pro-Ukraine, liberal-democratic platform. The announcement comes as French politics reconvenes after the summer break ahead of a highly polarized 2027 presidential contest. Glucksmann's relationship with France 2 news anchor Lea Salame, dubbed a “power couple,” has drawn media attention; she will suspend her anchoring role during the campaign to avoid conflicts of interest.

Why it matters

His candidacy could reshape the fragmented left and influence France's 2027 presidential outcome.
