Rare Charles Rennie Mackintosh lantern and chair to go under hammer this month
A rare lantern designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh, along with a ladderback chair from his Willow Tearooms, will be auctioned later this month.
An auction this month will present a rare Charles Rennie Mackintosh lantern, one of only five extant pieces, originally displayed in the White Dining Room of the Ingram Street building completed in 1901. Also included is a modest yet refined ladderback chair Mackintosh designed in 1903 for Miss Cranston’s Willow Tearooms on Sauchiehall Street, sourced from the estate of the late Glasgow architect Eric Sloane. Bidding for the chair is expected to begin between £10,000 and £15,000, while original Willow Tearooms cutlery will be offered with an estimate of £1,500 to £2,000.
The sale further comprises a folio of Mackintosh’s designs for Alexander Koch’s competition to create a House for an Art Lover, valued at £4,000-£6,000, and other related artifacts. Experts note Mackintosh’s pivotal role in Britain’s Modern Style and anticipate interest from both domestic and international collectors.
