Rare eye-focused autoimmune disease leads to new clues for targeted myasthenia treatment
A 26-year-old Chicago professional was diagnosed with ocular myasthenia gravis after months of misdiagnosis, and research on her donated thymus revealed persistent immune cells that could become a drug target.
In early 2023 Marissa Humayun, a 26-year-old professional from Chicago, woke with a drooping eyelid that was initially dismissed as fatigue or a possible stroke. After multiple specialist visits, a neuro-ophthalmologist identified ocular myasthenia gravis, an autoimmune disorder affecting eye muscles. She was referred to Dr. Ankit Bharat at Northwestern Medicine, where she had a minimally invasive, robot-assisted thymectomy in July 2023 and contributed her thymus to research.
Analysis of the donated tissue showed that the thymus can produce abnormal immune cells that persist after removal and may trigger disease recurrence, and a specific cellular pathway was pinpointed as a potential drug target. While Humayun now manages symptoms with infusion-based immunosuppression, the therapy leaves her vulnerable to infections. Bharat hopes that drugs aimed at the identified pathway could eliminate the harmful cells, sparing patients from broad immunosuppression and possibly preventing the need for surgery. The study also raises questions about similar mechanisms in other autoimmune conditions, though further evidence is needed.
