RATP unveils plan to diversify beyond Île-de-France and chase global contracts

RATP CEO Xavier Piechaczyk announced a strategy to reduce reliance on the Paris region and expand the group’s operations worldwide as its historic lines face competition.

RATP, the public transport operator founded in 1949, is preparing for the 2039 liberalisation of its Paris-area metro, bus, tram and RER lines, which will end its long-standing monopoly. CEO Xavier Piechaczyk outlined a diversification strategy aimed at securing new contracts outside Île-de-France to compensate for the inevitable loss of revenue from its main regional partner, Île-de-France Mobilités, led by Valérie Pécresse.

The plan calls for aggressive growth in overseas markets where RATP Dev already runs services in Denmark, Italy, Saudi Arabia, India and Australia, as well as domestic projects like Lyon’s metro and the Grand Paris Express line 15 south. A new corporate logo was also introduced, and the group stressed its capabilities in complex urban systems, infrastructure maintenance, energy networks and dense-area planning. Piechaczyk warned that the shift is a matter of survival as RATP competes with global operators such as Keolis, SNCF-backed ventures and Germany’s Transdev.

Why it matters

RATP’s shift could reshape public-transport markets in France and abroad, affecting jobs and service provision.
