RBA officials set to speak ahead of pivotal September cash rate decision

Senior Reserve Bank of Australia figures will appear at a Canberra summit and a parliamentary hearing before the September 29 rate meeting.

Ahead of the Reserve Bank of Australia's September 29 cash-rate decision, senior officials are scheduled to speak publicly. Sarah Hunter, the bank's chief economist, will take part in a fireside chat at a Regional Australia Institute summit in Canberra on Monday. Later in the week, Governor Michele Bullock will appear before a parliamentary committee on Friday.

Their remarks are anticipated to echo recent statements that inflation is still too elevated, leaving room for further tightening. Recent comments from Deputy Governor Andrew Hauser and Dr. Hunter have already moved bond markets, and traders now price a high probability of a 25-basis-point hike. Westpac's chief economist Luci Ellis suggests a September move is possible but sees a November hike as more likely.

Why it matters

The RBA's upcoming decision will influence Australian borrowing costs and broader economic conditions.
