RBI Governor stresses link between price stability and financial system health
RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra said that achieving price stability requires a stable financial system and outlined new steps to curb rupee volatility.
RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra told Moneycontrol that price stability cannot be attained without a sound financial system, because a stable system is essential for effective monetary transmission. While the RBI traditionally keeps monetary policy focused on inflation and uses separate macro-prudential instruments for financial risks, Malhotra said the two areas inevitably overlap. He detailed recent measures, including a forex reserve requirement, a ban on rebooking cancelled forex-derivative contracts, and tighter rules limiting non-resident non-deliverable rupee derivatives to hedging only.
A special dollar window for state-run oil-marketing firms was also introduced to reduce spot-market dollar demand. Following these steps, the rupee gained 0.5% to hit a one-month peak and has risen 1.6% over three sessions. The policy repo rate was raised by 25 basis points to 5.5% on October 7.
Why it matters
The RBI's actions affect inflation, currency stability and the broader Indian economy.
How the sides frame it
LOW AGREEMENTCenter coverage emphasizes the RBI's aggressive foreign-exchange actions and the resulting rupee rally while highlighting analyst concerns about external headwinds, whereas right-leaning coverage frames the story around the governor’s argument that price stability depends on a sound financial system and lists the same policy steps as supporting that view.
CENTER
Centrist coverage portrays the RBI’s FX measures as a bold “bazooka” that sparked a rupee rally but underscores ongoing debate and analyst worries about external pressures.
RIGHT
Right-leaning coverage presents the governor’s statements as a rationale that price stability and financial-system health are inseparable, using the same policy moves as evidence.
The right emphasises
- price stability cannot be achieved without a sound financial system
- policy steps (forex reserve requirement, ban on rebooking cancelled forex-derivative contracts, tighter NDF rules)
- rupee gain of 0.5% to a one-month peak
