RCMP and multiple police forces probe email threatening Muslim schools across Canada
The RCMP and several police agencies are investigating an email that threatened to kill Muslims and was sent to Islamic schools nationwide.
A threatening email targeting Muslim schools was circulated to multiple institutions in the Muslim Association of Canada network, primarily in Ontario and also in Montreal and Vancouver. The note referenced an upcoming Alberta referendum on secession and warned that Muslims would be “deported or slaughtered” if Alberta became a nation. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police’s northwest division, which covers the Prairie provinces, Northwest Territories and Nunavut, is leading the investigation together with police forces in Ottawa, Waterloo Region, Peel Region, London and Montreal; Vancouver police have also launched an inquiry and stepped up patrols.
Authorities have stated there is no indication of an immediate danger but have asked the public to remain alert. Federal Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree and several municipal leaders condemned the threats, calling for unity against Islamophobia. The incident has heightened concern for the safety of Muslim students and communities across the country.
