RCMP confirm male body found in Debert, suspect criminal involvement

More than three weeks after human remains were located near Debert, Nova Scotia, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police publicly confirmed the find and indicated that the death appears to involve criminal conduct. Officers had been conducting door-to-door inquiries since the July 22 discovery, but only released a statement on Thursday, noting the community’s rumors and distress. The statement, delivered by Corporal Mandy Edwards, said the investigation is ongoing and that the body belongs to a male individual.

The RCMP is working with the Nova Scotia Medical Examiner Service to determine the victim’s identity and the cause of death. Colchester North MLA Tom Taggart, who had not heard of the case before the announcement, said residents remain wary of police visits due to the 2020 mass-shooting trauma. He suggested the incident might be connected to organized-crime activity in the region.
