Real Madrid demands cost contributions from six Premier League clubs for failed Super League
Real Madrid says six English clubs that quit the 2021 European Super League must help cover the competition's set-up expenses.
Real Madrid has formally requested that the six Premier League clubs which withdrew from the 2021 European Super League contribute to the competition's initial set-up costs, which could total €80 million. The clubs named are Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur, all of which left the project within three days of its launch. So far, Juventus, Barcelona and Real Madrid have covered those expenses.
The clubs had signed a shareholders' agreement for the European Super League Company, but the agreement's wording on cost liability remains uncertain. Real Madrid has not said whether it will also pursue the three Italian clubs—AC Milan, Inter Milan and Atletico Madrid—that also exited early. Tottenham declined comment, and the other English clubs have not responded to inquiries.
Why it matters
The claim could trigger legal battles over billions of euros tied to a high-profile, failed football venture.
