Record 568 Public Officer Corruption Arrests Highlight Integrity Crisis in Malaysia
In 2024, Malaysia recorded a historic 568 arrests of public officers for corruption, the highest number ever, prompting concerns over administrative integrity.
A total of 568 public officers were arrested for corruption offences in 2024, marking the highest tally on record in Malaysia. Tan Sri Wan Ahmad Dahlan Abdul Aziz, director-general of the Public Service Department, attributed the rise to uneven law enforcement, flawed procurement procedures, and entrenched backdoor and "Little Napoleon" practices for personal gain. He warned that integrity problems rank among three key structural constraints hampering the public service, together with resistance to reform and a silo mentality.
The statistics were disclosed at the Adjunct Professor Inaugural Lecture held in the Dewan Tuanku Canselor at Universiti Malaysia Kelantan. Wan Ahmad Dahlan emphasized the need for continuous governance improvements to curb corruption, expressing confidence that sustained effort could eventually reduce the issue.
