Record Heat Pushes Power Grids Serving Over 100 Million North Americans to the Brink
Unseasonably high temperatures are driving electricity demand past 100 GW while maintenance outages leave key U.S. grids strained.
A severe heat wave, with readings up to 20 °F above average, is pushing electricity use to historic levels across the Midwest and the South, triggering heat advisories in cities such as St. Louis. The Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) reported roughly 51 GW of generation taken offline for autumn maintenance, even as demand is projected to reach 105.2 GW. Neighboring PJM Interconnection, which covers Chicago, Washington DC and Virginia’s Data Center Alley, warned that reserve capacity is under pressure and ordered large non-residential customers to curtail usage.
PJM anticipates demand topping 132 GW while nearly 37 GW of capacity remains offline, prompting a request to the U.S. Department of Energy for an emissions-rule waiver and the deployment of backup generation. Spot power prices on the benchmark Western hub spiked above $4,300 per megawatt-hour. Analysts note that aging plants and growing industrial and data-center loads, amplified by the AI boom, are exposing the limits of one outlet grid infrastructure.
