Record number of wind turbine referendums scheduled across Czech municipalities

Nineteen local referendums on wind farm construction will be held alongside municipal elections, covering up to 81 new turbines with a combined capacity of 450 MW.

Alongside the municipal council elections, Czech voters will cast ballots in 19 referendums concerning new wind farms. The proposals involve up to 81 turbines delivering a total of 450 MW, which could supply power to about 400,000 homes and more than double the nation’s existing wind output of 380 MW from roughly 220 installations. The Svaz moderní energetiky highlights a rapid increase in referendum activity, with 30 scheduled votes marking a record year and the total number of votes expected to exceed 100.

The highest concentration of votes will occur in the Central Bohemian Region, with additional polls in Pardubice, Moravian-Silesian, Plzeň, South Bohemian, Ústí nad Labem and Liberec regions. Energy experts stress that transparent communication about project impacts and guaranteed local benefits are crucial for referendum success.
