Applications by US residents for British citizenship climbed to a record 9,300 last year, exceeding the previous year’s total by more than double, according to one outlet. Property platform Goodlord recorded a 63% increase in American tenants since the November 2024 election, rising from 265 to 431, with the overall British rental market up 32%. London saw a 29% rise, while Manchester and north-west England experienced a 60% jump, and Scotland attracted the youngest renters, averaging 27 years old.
The surge is partly linked to 2022 reforms that allow Americans born before 1988 to claim citizenship through a UK-born mother or grandmother. Migrants like Oklahoma-born comedian Beth Knight highlight the appeal of Scotland’s public transport, NHS and social policies, while Liberal Democrat MP Christine Jardine urges fast-track visas for US workers seeking refuge from the current US administration.
