Recount flips Spandau seat, AfD candidate overtakes CDU rival
A new count in Berlin's Spandau district shows AfD candidate Tommy Tabor now ahead of CDU candidate Bettina Meißner for the direct mandate.
Following a recount in Berlin’s Spandau 1 constituency, the direct mandate has shifted from CDU candidate Bettina Meißner to AfD candidate Tommy Tabor. State election commissioner Stephan Bröchler reported a 124-vote variance, noting that the ballot-box record differed from the earlier rapid transmission of results. The Spandau district election committee is scheduled to convene on Friday to review the corrected figures.
The broader composition of the state parliament could change, as the allocation of overhang and compensatory seats may need to be recalculated if the AfD retains the seat. Bröchler indicated that the total number of parliament members might be reduced compared with the provisional count, affecting which list candidates ultimately take seats.
Why it matters
The reversal could reshape Berlin's parliamentary balance and affect seat distribution for multiple parties.
