Red Code Alert Issued as Category 4 Wildfire Risk Hits Attica and Evia
Greece’s General Secretariat for Civil Protection has placed Attica and Evia under Red Code, signalling a very high (Category 4) wildfire danger.
The General Secretariat for Civil Protection has warned of a very high wildfire threat, classified as Category 4, for Attica and the regional unit of Evia on Wednesday. Under the Red Code designation, the entire national civil-protection mechanism will be activated, deploying personnel, equipment and resources to prepare for and respond to any fire incidents. Municipalities and regional authorities must immediately convene their coordination bodies to assess readiness, while the Fire Service maintains a partial standby and second-stage operational readiness.
Patrols by firefighting, police and military forces, as well as increased aerial surveillance, will be intensified, and access to vulnerable areas such as national parks will be restricted. Residents are advised to refrain from burning vegetation, using spark-producing tools, grilling outdoors, or smoking, and to call 199 if they spot a fire.
