Red Code alert issued for nine Greek regions as severe weather approaches

Greece's General Secretariat for Civil Protection placed nine regions under Red Code due to worsening weather and expected heavy rain and storms.

In response to an escalating weather threat, the General Secretariat for Civil Protection has placed nine Greek regions under Red Code, the highest alert level. The affected zones include the regional units of Evia, Phthiotis and Boeotia in Central Greece; the regional units of Sporades, Magnesia and Larissa in Thessaly; the Attica region; the Dodecanese in the South Aegean; and the North Aegean region. The decision follows an emergency bulletin from the National Meteorological Service and a risk assessment by the Risk Assessment Committee.

Authorities are heightening preparedness as severe rain, thunderstorms and localized hail are forecast for the eastern areas, with conditions expected to persist at least until mid-week. The Red Code triggers full mobilization of the National Civil Protection Mechanism, deploying personnel, equipment and rapid-response actions to mitigate potential damage and protect lives and property.

Why it matters

The alert signals heightened risk of flooding and storm damage, prompting nationwide emergency measures.
