Red Cross reports two-year denial of access to Ukrainian POWs in Russia

The International Committee of the Red Cross announced that it has been barred from accessing Ukrainian prisoners of war in Russian detention since 2024. According to the ICRC, thousands of Ukrainian captives are thought to be held in Russian prisons where UN investigators have documented signs of systematic torture. The 1949 Geneva Conventions grant the Swiss-based Red Cross the right to inspect POW conditions, but Russia has refused such visits and rejects allegations of abuse.

ICRC President Mirjana Spoljaric highlighted the lack of access during a recent visit to Russia, emphasizing the need to uphold humanitarian principles. She told one outlet that discussing detention conditions is essential for preserving humanity. The Russian diplomatic mission in Geneva did not respond to a request for comment.
